Can AI run your social media replies? A one-week setup
Yes, AI can run your social media replies if you give it rules and a human queue. A one-week setup, the platform limits and what each tool costs in 2026.

Yes, AI can run most of your social media now, replies included, as long as you give it rules and keep a queue for the questions it can't answer. BetterSocials is best for an owner whose comments and DMs bring in customers, because it posts, collects every reply in one inbox and answers in your voice. Buffer fits if you mostly schedule posts and answer a few comments by hand, and Manychat fits if you build DM flows.
Our take: treat replies as a routing problem
BetterSocials, Buffer and Manychat all touch the replies, but the work that decides whether AI helps is routing. A reply is a lead, a support ticket, spam or small talk, and each one needs a different owner. We took the how-to angle for this piece, because an operator can set the whole thing up in a week.
The rule we'd follow is simple. Let the AI answer the everyday comments, give it written facts for the common questions, and send everything else to a human queue.
That setup keeps you as the face of the account. The AI does the typing, and you decide how much it sends on its own.
What an AI social media manager handles, job by job
BetterSocials describes an AI social media manager as one app that does the whole job: posting, replying and turning comments into DMs. An AI social media manager is software that writes, publishes and answers on your accounts, with you approving the work. The jobs split into two halves.
The posting half covers captions drafted in your voice and scheduled posts to Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Threads, TikTok and LinkedIn. BetterSocials posts to all six platforms from one place, with unlimited posts on every plan.
The reply half is where tools differ most. In BetterSocials it covers four jobs:
- Every comment and DM lands in one inbox, with views for Needs reply and Replied.
- The AI drafts each reply from a voice profile built from your past replies.
- A keyword in a comment can send the person a DM with your link on Instagram and Facebook.
- Each new message gets a tag on arrival, such as Lead, Spam or Support.
The Lead tag is the part an ops person should care about. A message asking about price, booking or availability gets tagged Lead, and the owner gets a push notification on their phone.
The one-week setup for one operator
BetterSocials menus are the ones named in these steps, since they're labelled plainly. The same plan works in any tool with an approval queue. BetterSocials puts the first setup at about ten minutes: connect the accounts, arm one keyword and approve a few drafts.
Day 1: connect accounts and write the facts
- Open Connected Accounts and connect the account with the most comments first. Each one takes under a minute, and you sign in on the platform's own screen.
- Go to Settings, then AI voice. Paste a handful of replies you've written into the Your voice box.
- Write your AI rules just above it, as plain sentences. Put in your prices, your hours and your booking link, plus anything the AI must never say.
Day 2 and 3: draft mode and one keyword
- In AI replies, set both Comments and DMs to Draft for me. Every new message gets a draft the moment it arrives, and nothing posts until you approve it.
- Approve comment drafts from Needs reply, or in a batch with Approve in bulk. DM drafts go out one at a time from the conversation.
- Open Comment to DM, hit New keyword link and fill in five fields: the accounts, the word, the public reply, the DM and whether AI rewrites each reply. Hit Go live.
Day 4 to 7: route leads and loosen the reins
- Decide who answers a Lead tag within the hour. Lead detection is on by default, and unanswered leads get at most one reminder email a day.
- Once the drafts read like you, switch Comments to Reply in my voice. Everyday comments get an answer 1 to 5 minutes after they land.
- Turn on Answer questions too only when your rules cover the common questions. The switch stays locked until you've written at least one rule.
Two ways to get an agent that posts and answers
BetterSocials and Composio show the two shapes an AI agent takes here. The first is an app that does both jobs inside its own screens. The second is your own assistant, such as Claude, connected to your accounts through an MCP server, which is a standard connector that lets an AI assistant use another app's tools.
BetterSocials offers both. Its hosted MCP server lets Claude read the inbox, send replies in your voice, and create and schedule posts, using your normal BetterSocials login. Every send from Claude happens on your instruction and goes through the same limits as the app.
ChatGPT gets less. It connects through Developer mode on a paid plan, on the web only, and a normal ChatGPT chat gets only the read tools. It can read the inbox and draft, but it can't send a reply or publish a post.
If you'd rather build the agent yourself, Composio sells the plumbing. Its Hobby plan is free with 100,000 tool calls a month, and Pro is $29 a month, as of October 2026, per Composio's pricing page. Its Instagram toolkit can reply to comments and send DMs, but its TikTok toolkit has no comments or DMs.
Which tools answer comments and DMs, compared for 2026
BetterSocials, Buffer, Hootsuite, Sprout Social, Later and Manychat all handle some part of the replies. The difference is what lands in the inbox and how the bill grows. Prices below are as of October 2026, with the billing period each vendor lists.
| Tool | Inbox covers | Plan price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| BetterSocials | Comments on six platforms, DMs on three | $29 monthly, four accounts | Owners whose replies bring customers |
| Buffer | Comments only, no DMs | $30 a month, six channels, yearly | Scheduling with light comment replies |
| Later | Instagram and Facebook DMs, TikTok comments | $37.50 a month on Growth, yearly | Instagram-first brands on Growth |
| Hootsuite | Social inbox, no YouTube comments | $99 per user, billed yearly | Teams with a per-seat budget |
| Sprout Social | Social inbox on Standard | $199 per seat, billed yearly | Larger teams paying per seat |
| Manychat | Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, TikTok DMs | $39 monthly on Pro, 2,500 contacts | Built DM flows and funnels |
Buffer is cheaper at matching account counts. Six channels on Buffer Essentials run $30 a month on yearly billing, against $39 a month billed yearly for BetterSocials Pro with six accounts. The difference, under ten dollars a month, buys Instagram, Facebook and TikTok DMs in the same inbox as the comments.
Later's Conversations inbox starts on Growth, which is $50 billed monthly, and it has no YouTube or LinkedIn conversations. Hootsuite's inbox starts on Standard, and its inbox does not include YouTube comments.
Manychat bills by contact, and the math matters in a busy month. A Pro account at $39 a month with 2,500 active contacts that reaches 4,000 people pays $0.05 for each contact past 2,500, which takes that month's bill past a hundred dollars. BetterSocials has unlimited contacts on every plan, so the same month costs the same.
Platform rules every reply tool has to follow
Instagram's DM window is the rule that shapes every reply tool, BetterSocials included. An app can only send a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message, and every new message from them restarts the clock. Past that window you can still reply from the Instagram app, which has no limit.
The other platforms have their own limits, and they apply to every tool:
- Instagram allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days of the comment being posted. Public comment replies have no time limit.
- TikTok DMs are reply-only. A business gets 48 hours and at most 10 replies after the person's last message, and the account must be a Business account.
- A TikTok comment can't trigger a private DM on any tool outside TikTok's limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia.
- YouTube has no DM API for any tool, so YouTube is comments and public replies only.
- LinkedIn personal profiles are posting and analytics only. Comments come from a Company Page.
On TikTok, YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages, a BetterSocials keyword posts a public reply with your link instead of a DM.
How BetterSocials handles the reply queue
BetterSocials runs AI replies in two sections, Comments and DMs, each with three settings: Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice. On Reply in my voice, a DM gets an answer about a minute after it arrives. The AI reads the conversation so far, so it doesn't repeat itself.
The guardrails are where an operator will spend their trust. When your rules don't cover what someone asked, the message waits for you in Needs reply. After five AI replies in one conversation in a day, the rest wait for you too, and every reply passes a filter for banned phrases, links and length before it sends.
Pricing is flat, with AI credits that meter only the writing. Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts and one login.
Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts. Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts and unlimited teammates.
Each AI reply uses one credit, and when credits run out the AI pauses instead of charging more. Every plan has a 7-day free trial with a card required, listed on the BetterSocials pricing page.
FAQ
Can AI reply to Instagram comments and DMs automatically?
Yes. BetterSocials answers Instagram comments under the comment and DMs in the conversation, in your voice. Instagram only lets an app send a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message, so fast answers matter. Past that window you can still reply from the Instagram app yourself.
Will AI replies sound like a bot?
They don't have to. BetterSocials builds a voice profile from replies you've already written and follows plain rules you set, such as never quoting prices. You can approve each draft until the voice sounds right.
Does Buffer reply to comments with AI?
Buffer has a Community inbox for comments on all plans, and it reads YouTube comments. It doesn't bring DMs into that inbox, so Instagram and Facebook messages stay in the phone app. Pick Buffer if you mostly schedule posts and answer a few comments by hand.
Can AI answer questions about my prices and hours?
Yes, if you give it the facts. In BetterSocials you write your prices, hours and booking link as AI rules, and the Answer questions too switch only turns on once you've written at least one. When a rule doesn't cover what someone asked, the message waits for you in Needs reply.
Can Claude or ChatGPT run my social media?
Partly. BetterSocials has a hosted MCP server, so Claude can read your inbox, send replies, and create and schedule posts on your instruction. In a normal ChatGPT chat only the read tools work, so it can read the inbox and draft but can't send a reply or publish a post.
How much does an AI social media manager cost?
BetterSocials Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts. Pro is $49 a month for six accounts, and Team is $99 a month for twelve accounts with unlimited teammates. Every plan has unlimited contacts and a 7-day free trial, card required.
