How to set up "comment LINK and I'll DM you" on Instagram in 2026

How "comment LINK and I'll DM you" works on Instagram: the keyword, the private reply, its limits, and which tool to use, from free Meta to ManyChat.

By Growth Ops Weekly staff9 min read

"Comment LINK and I'll DM you" is keyword comment-to-DM automation. Someone comments a word on your Instagram post, and a tool connected to Meta's official API sends that person a private message with your link. BetterSocials fits sellers whose comments arrive on several platforms and who want a flat bill: $29 a month for four accounts with unlimited contacts. Meta Business Suite does it free, and ManyChat bills by active contacts.

The four parts of a comment-to-DM funnel

Instagram comment-to-DM has four moving parts, and you control each one.

  1. The caption asks for one word, such as LINK or GUIDE.
  2. The tool watches new comments for that keyword.
  3. Your account posts a public reply under the comment, so the person knows a message is coming.
  4. The tool sends a private reply carrying the link. A private reply is a DM that Meta lets a business send in answer to a comment.

Only the click on that link proves the chain worked. Every number before it counts attempts.

What runs underneath, and the three kinds of tool

Meta built an approved API so tools can answer comments and DMs for a business, and comment-to-DM runs on it. Meta sets its limits per Instagram professional account, the account type Instagram offers to businesses and creators. A tool that logs in with your password instead is the kind of automation that breaks Meta's rules.

The tools that send the DM fall into three groups.

  • Keyword-first tools need only the keyword and the message. BetterSocials works this way, with no flow builder to set up.
  • Meta Business Suite, Meta's own free inbox, sends a fixed template you write when a comment contains your keyword.
  • ManyChat is a flow builder. You design the sequence the DM starts, and the bill follows the number of active contacts.

The steps below hold whether you build in BetterSocials, Meta Business Suite or ManyChat.

  1. Pick one short keyword per post, such as LINK. Meta Business Suite matches keywords case-sensitively and exactly, so plan for how people will type it.
  2. Write the public reply. Tell the commenter to check their DMs, and their message requests if they don't follow you.
  3. Write the DM as one or two sentences and the link.
  4. Tag the link with UTM parameters, the tags on the end of a URL that tell your analytics where a click came from. Use utm_source=instagram, a medium for the format or traffic type, and a utm_campaign named for the keyword.
  5. Put the exact keyword in the caption, and say the link arrives by DM.
  6. Turn the automation on, then comment the keyword from a second account to check it fires.
  7. Track link clicks per DM sent, per post. Instagram doesn't tell senders which folder a message landed in, so this ratio is your delivery report.

The ratio will drop on a post that travels, because more commenters are non-followers whose DMs land in requests. Compare a post seen mostly by followers with a cold-reach post that uses the same keyword and link. The gap between the two ratios is your delivery problem, separated from your copy.

Meta Business Suite is the cheapest option at $0, and for one link on Instagram and Facebook it does the job. A lead magnet is the free guide or offer you send in exchange for the comment. Prices in the table are as of October 2026.

ToolPlan priceBill grows withChannels
BetterSocials$29 a month, 4 accountsPlan tier, by account countInstagram, Facebook, YouTube, Threads, TikTok, LinkedIn
Meta Business Suite$0NothingInstagram, Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp
ManyChat$39 a month, 2,500 contactsActive contacts past 2,500Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, TikTok

BetterSocials fits when comments arrive on several platforms and you want a flat bill. Meta Business Suite is cheaper; the $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, buys keyword matching that ignores capitals, AI-written replies, link tagging and one inbox for six platforms on four accounts.

Pick Meta Business Suite if Instagram and Facebook are your only platforms and every commenter gets the same link. For that seller, the right software spend is $0.

ManyChat is the pick if the DM has to start a multi-step sequence or run on WhatsApp. Budget for the meter: past 2,500 active contacts, each extra person costs $0.05 on Pro.

The Instagram limits your automation runs inside

Meta caps private replies to comments at 750 calls an hour per Instagram professional account, per its Graph API rate limiting docs as checked in July 2026. Tools pace well below that, at roughly 200 automated DMs an hour per account.

  • Each comment gets one private reply, and only inside a 7-day window.
  • Comment triggers send one automated DM per person per 24 hours, so someone who comments on two posts in a day gets one DM.
  • A commenter who doesn't follow you gets the DM in message requests, and filters can hide it.
  • Once the person writes back, you can reply for 24 hours after their last message. Past that, BetterSocials and most other tools can't send, though you can still answer in the Instagram app.
  • Meta deprecated message tags in April 2026. Tools had used them to message people outside the 24-hour window.

A good post is where the queue hurts. A Reel that collects 3,000 keyword comments at about 200 DMs an hour needs 3,000 / 200 = 15 hours to clear. Any comment still waiting when its 7-day window closes never gets its DM.

In a June 2026 thread on r/Manychat, a creator reported fewer than half of their comment-triggered DMs reaching commenters. The cause was Instagram's routing, which every tool on the official API lives with. No vendor can guarantee delivery, so measure clicks.

How the keyword setup works in BetterSocials

BetterSocials is best for sellers whose keyword comments arrive on several platforms, and it sets a keyword up on one screen with five fields. Its help center puts the whole setup at about ten minutes. Open Comment to DM, hit New keyword link, and fill in the screen.

  1. Pick the connected accounts the keyword runs on, or leave it on all of them.
  2. Type the word to watch for, such as LINK. Capitals don't matter.
  3. Write the public reply your account posts under the comment.
  4. Write the DM and the link the person gets.
  5. Leave AI replies off, or turn them on so each reply is written fresh in your tone.

Hit Go live and it runs. On Instagram and Facebook, BetterSocials posts the public reply and sends the DM. On YouTube, Threads, TikTok and LinkedIn Company Pages, the message and link post as the public reply instead.

Turn on Link tracking under Settings, and BetterSocials adds UTM tags with the platform, the format and the keyword to every keyword link at send time. It's off by default on every plan, and replies you type by hand in the inbox are never tagged.

Every new comment and DM gets a tag on arrival, such as Lead for questions about price, booking or availability, and a new lead sends a push notification to the owner's phone. The sending engine paces sends to platform limits and removes duplicates so nobody gets the same DM twice. None of that moves a DM out of the requests folder.

Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts and one login. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts. Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts and unlimited teammates, and every plan has unlimited contacts and a 7-day free trial with a card.

When Meta Business Suite's free automation is enough

Meta Business Suite includes a comment-to-message automation at no charge. It sends a message reply when a comment on your post contains keywords or phrases you set, per Meta's automations help page, read October 16, 2026.

The rules are strict, and most of them sit on Meta's keyword automation help page.

  • Setup happens in Meta Business Suite on desktop only.
  • The message is a fixed template you write, and every commenter gets the same one.
  • Each keyword automation holds up to 5 keywords or phrases, and a keyword can sit in only one automation.
  • Matching is case-sensitive, so a message only sends when the keyword matches exactly.
  • Inbox sends a keyword automation after 15 minutes unless you respond first.
  • When a template automation and a custom keyword automation both fire, Meta sends the template and not the keyword reply.

Meta's own pages disagree on the trigger: one says keywords or phrases, another says hashtags.

If Instagram and Facebook are your only public platforms and the DM is the same sentence and link every time, set this up and stop. The offer and the post make the money, whichever tool delivers the DM.

What ManyChat's comment trigger costs as reach grows

ManyChat runs comment-to-DM through a trigger on Instagram post and Reel comments, and its help center walks through the build in Quick Automation: Auto-DM links from comments. It works on Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and TikTok, and its flow builder lets the DM open a longer sequence.

ManyChat bills by active contacts and charges for each one past the plan's allowance. Pro is $39 a month with 2,500 active contacts included, as of October 2026. Each extra contact costs $0.10 on Essential, $0.05 on Pro and $0.025 on Business, billed monthly.

A Pro account with 4,000 active contacts in a month pays the $39 plan price plus $0.05 for every contact past 2,500, a bill a little over a hundred dollars. Forecast the overage line, because a post that works raises that month's bill.

A June 2026 thread on r/Manychat reported fewer than half of comment-triggered DMs arriving. Post a public reply that tells people to check requests, and measure link clicks.

Does comment-to-DM work on TikTok and YouTube?

No tool can turn a TikTok or YouTube comment into a private DM, outside TikTok's limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. YouTube has no DM API for any tool. On both, a keyword tool posts a public reply with your link under the comment instead.
