How to connect Claude or ChatGPT to your social inbox

Connect Claude or ChatGPT to a social tool through MCP to answer comments and DMs and post. The steps, the servers and the platform limits.

By Growth Ops Weekly staff9 min read

Yes. Claude and ChatGPT can read your comments and DMs, draft replies and post for you once you connect them to a social tool through MCP. BetterSocials is best for answering comments and DMs across six platforms from Claude, Blotato is best for posting from Claude with Instagram and Facebook replies, and Upload-Post is best for ChatGPT users who want a reviewed app. Claude runs every BetterSocials tool, while ChatGPT in a normal chat reads and drafts.

The wiring: what MCP does between your AI and your accounts

Claude and ChatGPT don't hold your Instagram or TikTok logins, so they need a connector to a tool that does. That connector speaks MCP, the Model Context Protocol, an open standard that lets an AI assistant operate other software. An MCP server turns a product's actions into tools the assistant can call, such as reading the inbox or scheduling a post.

We took the how-to angle here, because this is a setup you can finish this week. The steps assume your social accounts sit in one tool and you have a Claude account or a paid ChatGPT plan.

Know the split before you start. Claude runs every BetterSocials tool, from reading to sending. ChatGPT, through a custom connector in a normal chat, reads and drafts, and the send stays with you.

What Claude and ChatGPT each do with your comments and DMs

Claude, once connected to a server such as BetterSocials, can read your Inbox, pull one person's thread, draft a reply in your voice and send it when you tell it to. The same chat can create, caption and schedule posts, manage keyword automations and read analytics. Every send happens on your instruction.

ChatGPT works differently. It connects through Developer mode, which needs a paid plan on the web. In a normal chat, BetterSocials offers ChatGPT only its read tools, so it can read the Inbox and draft a reply but can't send it, publish a post or edit a project.

That limit comes from OpenAI, not the tool. OpenAI keeps write actions from custom connectors for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces. If your company runs one of those, sending and posting from ChatGPT open up.

The practical read for whoever owns the stack: pick Claude when the assistant should press send, and ChatGPT when you want a drafting partner with a person on the send.

Which social media MCP servers handle posting, comments and DMs

BetterSocials, Blotato, Upload-Post, Ayrshare and Metricool all host an MCP server, and they split by job. The table compares the five on prices as of October 2026, taken from each vendor's own pages.

ServerPostingComment repliesDMsEntry price
BetterSocialsSix platformsSix platformsInstagram, Facebook, TikTok$29/mo for 4 accounts
BlotatoNine platformsInstagram and Facebook postsRead and send$29/mo Starter, monthly
Upload-PostTen platformsRead and replySend and list$24/mo or $16 yearly
AyrshareAt least 14 networksRead and replyBusiness plan or add-on$149/mo Premium, monthly
MetricoolScheduled postsNot through the MCPNot through the MCP$0 Free, Starter $25/mo

BetterSocials puts comments from Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages in one Inbox, with DMs on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts and one login. Claude and ChatGPT sign in with OAuth, a normal login, so there's no key to copy.

Blotato's 32 tools publish to nine platforms and reply to comments on your Instagram or Facebook posts. Starter is $29 a month, billed monthly, and API and MCP access aren't in its free trial. Generating an API key during the trial ends the trial and starts billing, so read Blotato's MCP setup guide and test on a paid plan.

Upload-Post is cheaper to start. Basic is $24 a month, or $16 billed yearly, and Free covers 10 uploads. Its hosted server posts, reads comments and sends DMs.

Ayrshare fits a developer stack. Its server takes only an API key in an Authorization header, so Claude Code, Cursor and n8n work, and claude.ai web, Claude Desktop and Claude mobile personal connectors don't. DMs need the Business plan or a $49 a month add-on on Premium, as of October 2026.

Metricool's MCP schedules posts and reads analytics on any plan, Free included. Its MCP limits page says inbox messages and post comments "are not available through the MCP at the moment," so use it for the calendar. Starter is $25 a month, or $20 billed yearly, for 5 brands.

Getting ChatGPT to post to Instagram and TikTok

ChatGPT can't post to Instagram or TikTok by itself, so every post goes through a connected tool. There are two ways in.

The first is the ChatGPT app directory. Upload-Post is a reviewed app there, so it connects with no Developer mode and no URL to paste. The second is a custom connector in Developer mode, which needs a paid plan and the web app. Upload-Post's manual setup asks for Developer mode on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu. Blotato connects to ChatGPT.com with OAuth, and Metricool's ChatGPT setup needs access to ChatGPT Apps.

Then the write rule applies. OpenAI reserves write actions from custom connectors for Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces. Through BetterSocials, a normal ChatGPT chat reads the Inbox and drafts, and posting to Instagram or TikTok happens from Claude, from the app or from one of those workspaces.

The platform rules every connector works inside

BetterSocials uses the platforms' official APIs, and the same limits apply to any tool that does, whichever AI sits on top. Know them before you promise anyone a response time.

  • Instagram only lets a business reply to a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message. After that the conversation stays closed until they write again, though you can still answer in the Instagram app.
  • TikTok DMs are reply-only, with at most 10 replies within 48 hours of the person's last message. The account must be a Business account, and apps can answer DMs only for accounts outside the UK and Europe.
  • A TikTok comment can't trigger a private DM on any tool outside TikTok's limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia.
  • YouTube has no DM API for any tool, so YouTube is comments and public replies.
  • LinkedIn personal profiles are posting and analytics only. No tool can read their comments or LinkedIn DMs through the API, so connect a Company Page for comments.

The 24-hour rule is the one to plan around. A question that sits overnight in an app nobody opened can age out before anyone answers.

Set it up this week: the steps in Claude and ChatGPT

Claude is the quicker setup, because custom connectors work on every Claude plan. The steps below use BetterSocials as the example server.

In Claude

  1. Connect your social accounts to the tool first. In BetterSocials that's Connected Accounts in the sidebar, where you sign in on each platform's own screen.
  2. In Claude on the web, desktop or mobile, open Settings, then Connectors, then Add custom connector.
  3. Name it BetterSocials, paste https://bettersocials.ai/api/mcp, then choose Add and Connect.
  4. Approve the BetterSocials sign-in that opens. The tools show up in your next chat.
  5. Run a read request first, such as listing what's in Needs reply, before you ask it to send anything.

In ChatGPT

  1. Turn on Developer mode in ChatGPT Settings, under Plugins. It needs a paid plan on the web.
  2. Open the Plugins page in the left sidebar and create the plugin there, not on the settings screen.
  3. Name it BetterSocials, paste the same server URL, leave Authentication on OAuth, tick the confirmation box and choose Create.
  4. Use it in a normal chat for reading and drafts, and send from the Inbox.

For scripts, Claude Code and Codex, BetterSocials issues API keys under Settings, then API and AI keys. There's no Zapier or Make integration, so the API and MCP are the two routes in.

BetterSocials as the inbox behind the connector

BetterSocials is the server we'd connect first when the job is answering comments and DMs, because the Inbox, your voice and the approval rules already live there. Claude runs every tool on its hosted server: read the Inbox, draft and send replies in your voice, create and schedule posts, manage keywords and read analytics.

Approval is the default, which matters when you answer for what goes out. Draft for me holds every reply for your approval, and Reply in my voice sends on its own only after you switch it on. Questions wait in Needs reply unless you turn on Answer questions too, which needs at least one AI rule (your prices, hours or booking link) first.

Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts and one login. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts, and Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts and unlimited teammates. Every plan has unlimited contacts and a 7-day free trial with a card, and BetterSocials's pricing page is where you start it.

Manychat, which automates Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and TikTok DMs, meters by contact instead. Pro is $39 a month for 2,500 active contacts, plus $0.05 for each extra contact, billed monthly, as of October 2026. So a busy month on Pro costs more than its list price, while a BetterSocials plan stays flat however many people write in.

FAQ

Do I need an API key to connect Claude to BetterSocials?

No. Claude and ChatGPT connect to BetterSocials with your normal login through OAuth, so there's no key to copy. In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors, then Add custom connector, and paste the server URL. API keys are for scripts, Claude Code and Codex, under Settings, then API and AI keys.

Can ChatGPT send replies through a connector in a normal chat?

Not through BetterSocials. ChatGPT connects through Developer mode, which needs a paid plan on the web, and a normal chat runs the read tools only, so it reads the Inbox and drafts a reply. Sending, posting and editing from ChatGPT need a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace. Claude runs the full set.

Which Claude plans allow custom connectors?

Claude allows custom connectors on Free, which allows one, and on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. On Team and Enterprise an Owner adds them for everyone. Once BetterSocials is added, Claude opens a BetterSocials sign-in, you approve it, and the tools show up in your next chat.

Can an AI reply to an Instagram DM after 24 hours?

No. Instagram only lets a business reply to a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message, and after that the conversation stays closed until they write again, for BetterSocials and most other tools. You can still answer in the Instagram app. That's why a fast reply matters, from you or from the AI.

Can an AI turn a TikTok or YouTube comment into a DM?

YouTube has no DM API for any tool, and a TikTok comment can't trigger a private DM outside TikTok's limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. On both, a BetterSocials keyword posts a public reply with your link. TikTok DMs people send you can be answered for 48 hours, up to 10 replies.

Will an AI connected to my inbox send things I didn't approve?

Not in BetterSocials. A send or post from Claude or ChatGPT only happens on your instruction and goes through the same limits as the app. Inside the app, Draft for me holds every reply for your approval, and Reply in my voice sends on its own only after you switch it on.

Is there an open-source social media MCP server on GitHub?

Yes. Postiz is an open-source scheduler with MCP built in and 37,288 GitHub stars on October 16, 2026, though it has no inbox. HagaiHen's facebook-mcp-server reads and replies to Facebook Page comments and sends DMs with a Page access token. You host both yourself.
