How coaches turn Reel comments into discovery calls

Ask for one keyword in your Reel, DM the booking link when someone comments it, and answer price and fit questions from rules you wrote first.

A coach turns Reel comments into discovery calls by asking for one keyword in the Reel, sending the booking link by DM the moment someone comments it, and answering the price and fit questions that follow from rules written ahead of time. Meta Business Suite sends the keyword DM for free and is best for one keyword with one fixed answer. ManyChat is best for coaches who want multi-step flows. BetterSocials is best when the questions after the link are where calls get booked, from $29 a month for four accounts.

How a Reel becomes a booked discovery call

BetterSocials, Meta Business Suite and ManyChat can all send a DM when someone comments a keyword, so the steps below apply whichever tool you pick. We wrote this as a set-up guide: six numbered steps an operator can finish this week, with the limits that shape each one.

The pipeline has three moves. You say one keyword in the Reel. Anyone who comments it gets a public reply under the comment and a DM with your booking link. Then the questions that follow get answered fast, before the person moves on.

A comment-to-DM tool is software that watches your comments for a keyword and sends a private message when it appears. Speed is the whole point. Answer within minutes and the person can book the same day. Answer a day later and the DM can sit outside Instagram's 24-hour reply window.

Step 1: decide which comments count as leads

BetterSocials tags every new comment and DM as it arrives, and anything asking about price, booking or availability becomes a Lead. Those are the comments worth a discovery call: "what does it cost", "are you taking clients", "how do I work with you", and the keyword itself.

Write that list down before you post. It is your routing rule, the same way a sales team decides which form fills go to a rep. A compliment is engagement. A price question is a lead.

In BetterSocials, lead detection is free and on by default. A new lead sends a push notification to your phone, so you see it between client sessions. Unanswered leads get at most one reminder email a day. You can add your own tags too, if you want a tag for each program you sell.

Step 2: check Meta's private reply limits before you launch

Meta's Instagram Messaging API allows one private reply per comment, and every comment-to-DM tool on the official API works inside the same rules. A private reply is the DM a business sends to someone because they commented.

The rules, from Meta's private replies documentation:

  1. Only one message can go to the person who commented.
  2. It has to be sent within 7 days of the comment.
  3. The conversation only continues if the person writes back, and then inside Instagram's 24-hour messaging window.
  4. Followers get the DM in their Inbox folder. Everyone else gets it in their Request folder.

Volume has its own ceiling. Meta's published cap is 750 private-reply calls per hour per Instagram professional account for posts and Reels. Automation platforms pace closer to 200 DMs an hour, and comment triggers are capped at one automated DM per person per 24 hours.

So plan for the queue. At about 200 DMs an hour, 3,000 keyword comments take about 15 hours to clear. A comment still waiting when its 7-day window closes gets no DM at all.

Step 3: write the public reply and the first DM

BetterSocials, Meta Business Suite and ManyChat each let you set the first DM, and for a coach that DM carries one thing: the booking link. Keep it short. Thank them, give the link, and ask one question about what they want help with.

The call does the qualifying, so the DM doesn't need to. A long qualifying script in the first message adds a step between the comment and the calendar.

The public reply matters just as much. Most people who find a Reel don't follow you yet, and their DM lands in message requests. A public reply such as "Sent, check your message requests" tells them where to look. We covered the wording in more depth in How to set up "comment LINK and I'll DM you" on Instagram in 2026.

Step 4: put your price and fit answers into rules

BetterSocials answers questions from AI rules, plain sentences you write once, such as your price, your booking link and who your program fits. This is the step that keeps calls booking while you coach.

The settings live in Settings, then AI voice, with the same switch in the Inbox header. AI replies has two sections, Comments and DMs, and each has three settings:

  • Off means you write every reply yourself.
  • Draft for me writes a draft in your voice the moment a comment or DM arrives, and nothing posts until you approve it.
  • Reply in my voice answers everyday comments 1 to 5 minutes later, and a DM gets an answer about a minute after it arrives.

Questions still wait in Needs reply until you turn on Answer questions too. That switch only turns on once you've written at least one AI rule, so the AI answers from your facts. When your rules don't cover what someone asked, the AI doesn't guess. The comment or DM waits for you in Needs reply.

After five AI replies in one conversation in a day, the rest wait for you as well. Each reply or draft uses 1 AI credit, and Creator includes 1,000 a month.

Step 5: pick the tool that runs it in 2026

BetterSocials, Meta Business Suite and ManyChat cover this job at different prices, and Meta's option costs nothing. The table below shows each one's plan price as of October 2026, how the keyword DM works, and how it handles questions after the link.

ToolPriceKeyword DMPrice questionsBest for
BetterSocialsCreator $29 a month, four accountsPublic reply plus DM with linkAI answers from your written rulesCoaches whose DMs bring questions
Meta Business SuiteFree inside Business SuiteTemplate DM, up to 15-minute waitSame fixed template every timeOne keyword, one fixed answer
ManyChatPro $39 a month, 2,500 contactsKeyword or flow-builder triggerFlows you build per keywordMulti-step flows across WhatsApp and Messenger

Meta Business Suite wins on price. Its keyword message automations hold at most 5 case-sensitive keywords each, setup is on desktop, and every commenter gets the same template you wrote.

ManyChat Pro is $39 a month, billed monthly, with 2,500 active contacts, and each extra contact costs $0.05. So every contact past the first 2,500 in a month adds $0.05 to the bill, and a busy Reel month can push it well past the $39 base. ManyChat works on Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and TikTok.

BetterSocials Creator is $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly, for four accounts and one login. Contacts, DMs and keyword automations are unlimited on every plan. What the price buys over the free option is the answer to the second message. For a wider list, see 10 Instagram DM tools for small businesses in 2026: our pick, then by price.

Step 6: build the keyword in BetterSocials

BetterSocials sets up a keyword in five fields on its Comment to DM page, with no flow builder. Hit New keyword link and fill them in order:

  1. Accounts: which connected accounts it runs on.
  2. When someone comments: the keyword you say in the Reel. Capitals don't matter.
  3. Reply on the comment: the public reply that sends people to their message requests.
  4. And DM them this: the message and your booking link.
  5. AI replies: off to start, or on to have each reply written fresh in your tone.

Hit Go live and it runs. Then set AI replies for DMs to Draft for me for the first week, approve a few drafts until the voice sounds right, and write your price and fit rules.

Plans run from Creator at $29 a month for four accounts, to Pro at $49 a month for six accounts, or $39 billed yearly. Every plan has a 7-day free trial with a card required, listed on BetterSocials' pricing page.

FAQ

Is comment-to-DM allowed on Instagram?

Yes. Meta's messaging API includes private replies, which let a business send one DM to a person who commented. The message has to go out within 7 days of the comment. The conversation only continues if the person writes back, inside Instagram's 24-hour messaging window.

Where does the DM go if the commenter doesn't follow me?

Into their message requests. Meta's private replies documentation says the DM lands in the Inbox folder for followers and the Request folder for everyone else. That's why the public reply under the comment matters. It tells the person to check their requests for your booking link.

How many automated DMs can I send an hour on Instagram?

Meta's published cap is 750 private-reply calls per hour per Instagram professional account for posts and Reels. Automation platforms pace closer to 200 DMs an hour, and comment triggers are capped at one automated DM per person per 24 hours. At that pace, 3,000 keyword comments take about 15 hours to clear.

Can I DM someone back after 24 hours?

Not from a tool. Instagram only lets a business reply to a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message, and after that the conversation is closed until they write again. BetterSocials and most other tools can't send past that window. You can still answer in the Instagram app.

Is there a free way to send a DM when someone comments a keyword?

Yes. Meta Business Suite includes a free comment-to-message automation for Instagram and Facebook. You set it up on desktop, and every commenter gets the same template you wrote. Its keyword message automations hold at most 5 case-sensitive keywords each and can wait 15 minutes before sending.

Does comment-to-DM work on TikTok and YouTube?

Only as a public reply. On TikTok and YouTube no tool can turn a comment into a private DM, so a keyword there posts a public reply under the comment with your link. The DM with a link works on Instagram and Facebook, and TikTok DMs people send you can still be answered.

Will the AI answer price questions about my coaching?

Only from facts you give it. In BetterSocials you write your price, your booking link and who your program fits as AI rules. Questions wait in Needs reply until you turn on Answer questions too, and anything your rules don't cover still waits for you there.
