Social media software budget for a small business (2026)

Most small business owners running social alone should budget $20 to fifty dollars a month. What Buffer, BetterSocials, Hootsuite and others cost.

By Growth Ops Weekly staff8 min read

Most small business owners who run social alone should budget between $20 and fifty dollars a month for social media software. Buffer fits if you only post, at $5 a channel a month billed yearly, so four accounts cost $20 as of October 2026. BetterSocials fits if customers ask prices in comments and DMs, at $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts with one inbox and AI replies.

Hootsuite starts at $99 per user a month billed annually, as of October 2026. That's a team budget, and a solo owner rarely needs it.

Three price bands, sorted by the job you pay for

Buffer, BetterSocials and Hootsuite each sit in a different price band, and the job you need done decides which band you shop in. We took the how-to angle for this piece: count what you have, price it at that size, then test before you pay. Every price below carries its billing period, because yearly and monthly rates differ on almost every plan.

The first band is posting only, at $0 to $25 a month, as of October 2026. Metricool Free costs nothing for one brand and 20 posts a month. Buffer Essentials runs 4 x $5 = $20 a month billed yearly, or 4 x $6 = $24 monthly, and Later Starter is $18.75 a month billed yearly, or $25 monthly.

The second band is posting plus an inbox, at $20 to about fifty dollars a month. An inbox here means one screen that collects the comments and DMs from every connected account. As of October 2026, BetterSocials Creator is $24 a month billed yearly for four accounts, SocialBee Bootstrap is $29 a month or $290 a year for five profiles, and Later's Conversations inbox starts on Growth at $37.50 a month billed yearly.

The third band is the per-user suite, at $79 to $199 a seat. Agorapulse Standard is $79 per user a month billed yearly, or $99 monthly, as of October 2026. Sprout Social Essentials is $79 per seat billed yearly, and Sprout's inbox sits on Standard at $199 per seat a month billed annually.

Five pricing models that skip the seat charge

Buffer, Metricool, SocialBee, Sendible and BetterSocials each bill on something other than the number of people who sign in. That matters the day a second person needs a login, and each model suits a different buyer.

  • Buffer bills per channel. Essentials is $5 a channel a month billed yearly, or $6 monthly, for one user, and Team is $10 a channel billed yearly, or $12 monthly, with unlimited team members. Pick Buffer if you mostly schedule posts and answer a few comments by hand.
  • Metricool bills per brand, its unit for one business's group of social networks. Free covers one brand, 20 posts a month and 30 days of analytics, and Advanced is from $53 a month billed yearly, or $67 monthly, with unlimited team members. Pick Metricool if reports and several brands matter more than replies.
  • SocialBee bills per plan, with a cap on profiles and users. Bootstrap is $29 a month, or $290 a year, for five profiles and one user, and Pro is $99 a month, or $990 a year, for 25 profiles and three users per workspace. Pick SocialBee if you're one person with up to five profiles who wants Facebook and Instagram comments and DMs next to the calendar.
  • Sendible bills per plan with unlimited users on every plan. Core is $30 a month billed yearly, or $35 monthly. Pick Sendible if several people need logins on a fixed budget.
  • BetterSocials bills per plan by account count, with unlimited contacts on every plan. Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts and one login, and Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts and unlimited teammates. Pick BetterSocials if comments and DMs bring in customers and you want AI replies drafted in your voice.

Size your own bill in four steps

Buffer and BetterSocials both give one owner a single login at four accounts, so the solo choice comes down to the job. One login is enough for one owner. These four steps fit in an afternoon this week.

  1. Count your accounts and the people who log in. Write down every account you post to and every person who'll sign in, then compare plans only at that size.
  2. Name the job you pay for. It's posting alone, or posting plus the comments and DMs where buyers ask prices and book.
  3. Price both billing periods at your count. At four accounts and one login, Buffer Essentials is 4 x $5 = $20 a month billed yearly, or 4 x $6 = $24 monthly, and BetterSocials Creator is $24 billed yearly, or $29 monthly.
  4. Test with a week of real messages. BetterSocials has a seven-day trial with a card required, SocialBee has a 14-day trial and Agorapulse a 30-day trial.

Buffer is cheaper at this size, by $4 a month on yearly billing and $5 on monthly. What the difference buys is the DM side of the inbox, AI replies and keyword comment-to-DM. If you only post, keep the $4.

Two logins, four accounts: what each seat model bills

Hootsuite, Sprout Social and Agorapulse charge per person, and the second login is where their bills pull away from flat plans. The table below shows the monthly bill for two people and four accounts on yearly billing, as of October 2026.

ToolPlanSeat modelBill math
BufferTeamPer channel4 x $10 a channel
BetterSocialsTeamFlat, 12 accounts$79 flat
SendibleCoreFlat, unlimited users$30 flat
MetricoolAdvancedFlat, unlimited team membersFrom $53 flat
SocialBeeProFlat, three users$990 a year
AgorapulseStandardPer user2 x $79 a user
Sprout SocialEssentialsPer seat2 x $79 a seat
HootsuiteStandardPer user2 x $99 a user

Sendible and Buffer are the cheapest here for two logins, and Hootsuite comes to just under two hundred dollars a month. BetterSocials Team costs more than Sendible and Buffer, and what the extra buys is DMs and AI replies in one inbox, plus room for twelve accounts. Sprout Social's inbox sits on Standard at $199 a seat billed annually, so two seats there come to nearly four hundred dollars a month.

Entry plans for one owner, and where each stops for DM sales

Buffer, BetterSocials, Later, Metricool and Hootsuite all sell an entry plan that one owner can run. The table lists each entry price billed yearly, the monthly rate, the logins included and where the inbox starts, as of October 2026.

PlanYearly billingMonthly billingLoginsInbox
Buffer Essentials, 4 channels$20$241Comments only
BetterSocials Creator, 4 accounts$24$291Comments and DMs
Later Starter$18.75$251On Growth, $37.50 yearly
Metricool Free$0$01On Free
Hootsuite Standard$99 per userNot listed1 per seatOn Standard

Buffer's inbox covers comments, and Instagram and Facebook DMs stay in the phone apps. Later's Conversations inbox handles Instagram DMs and comments from Growth, and it has no YouTube or LinkedIn conversations. Metricool Free stops at 20 posts a month, and Hootsuite puts its inbox on Standard at the full $99 seat.

When paying for the DM side covers its cost

ManyChat and BetterSocials both answer Instagram DMs, and paying for that side makes sense once customers ask prices and book there. Instagram only lets a business reply to a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message. After that, the conversation stays closed until they write again, so a DM left waiting in the app can cost you the sale.

ManyChat bills by active contacts each month. Its Pro plan is $39 a month billed monthly with 2,500 active contacts, then $0.05 for each extra contact. A month that reaches 4,000 people costs $114: the $39 plan plus $0.05 for every contact past 2,500.

BetterSocials has unlimited contacts and bills nothing per contact, so the same month stays at $29 on Creator for four accounts. For a wider look at where each scheduler puts its inbox, see What a comment and DM inbox costs on each social media scheduler in 2026.

How BetterSocials prices the inbox and the replies

BetterSocials sells three plans, each priced by account count with unlimited contacts. Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts, one login and 1,000 AI credits a month. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts and one login, and Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts and unlimited teammates.

Every plan puts comments and DMs in one inbox. AI replies have three settings, Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice, and questions wait in Needs reply unless you switch on Answer questions too, which needs at least one AI rule with your prices or booking link. A keyword in an Instagram or Facebook comment sends the person a DM with your link, and on TikTok, YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages the keyword posts a public reply with the link instead.

Every plan starts with a seven-day trial, card required, and a 30-day money-back guarantee on the first paid charge. The trial starts from BetterSocials' pricing page, and its AI social media manager page shows how the inbox works.

FAQ

Is per-channel pricing cheaper than per-user pricing for a small business?

For one owner, it usually is. Buffer Essentials is $5 a channel a month billed yearly, so four accounts cost $20, while Hootsuite Standard is $99 per user a month billed annually before a second person joins. Per-user pricing only comes out ahead when a few people manage many accounts.

How much does Buffer cost for four social accounts in 2026?

Buffer Essentials is $5 a channel a month billed yearly, or $6 monthly, so four channels cost $20 or $24 a month for one user. Team is $10 a channel billed yearly, about forty dollars for four, with unlimited team members. Its inbox handles comments, and Instagram and Facebook DMs stay in the apps.

Does Metricool charge per user?

Metricool prices by brand instead of by user. The free plan covers one brand and 20 posts a month. Team members come in on Advanced, from $53 a month billed yearly or $67 monthly, which includes unlimited team members.

Do I need a tool that answers DMs, or is a scheduler enough?

If customers only comment, a scheduler with a comment inbox is enough. If they ask prices and book in DMs, you need the DM side too. Instagram only lets a business reply within 24 hours of the person's last message, so a DM left waiting in the app can close for good.

What does BetterSocials cost for a small business?

Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts and one login. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts. Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts and unlimited teammates, and every plan has unlimited contacts and a seven-day trial.

Is there a free social media management tool for a small business?

Metricool's free plan covers one brand, 20 posts a month and 30 days of analytics, which suits an owner testing a schedule. BetterSocials has no free plan, because every connected account costs it money. Every BetterSocials plan starts with a seven-day trial, card required, and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
