How to set up comment-to-DM with a public reply

BetterSocials and InstantDM send the DM and post a public reply under the comment. The Instagram rules, prices and setup steps, with Manychat compared.

BetterSocials and InstantDM both send a commenter a DM and post a public reply under the comment. BetterSocials is best for running both from one keyword with no flow builder, at $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts. Manychat is best if you need WhatsApp or multi-step flows, and InstantDM fits if Instagram and Facebook are your only platforms and you want a Free plan.

Three comment-to-DM tools, and what they cost

BetterSocials and InstantDM each pair the DM with a public reply, the line your account posts under the comment where everyone scrolling can see it, and Manychat sends the DM with multi-step flows behind it. We wrote this version as a setup guide for whoever owns the automation, so it ends in steps you can run this week. Comment-to-DM means a keyword in a comment triggers an automatic DM to the person who wrote it.

The table below shows prices as of October 2026.

Pick Manychat if your funnel runs through WhatsApp or needs a sequence of messages after the first DM. Pick InstantDM if you only sell on Instagram and Facebook and want to start free. Pick BetterSocials if your comments arrive on more platforms than Meta's and you want every comment and DM in one inbox.

The rules both replies follow on Instagram

On Instagram, BetterSocials, Manychat and InstantDM all work under the same Meta rules, because the public reply and the DM are two separate actions. Meta calls the DM a private reply: one per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment being posted. Public comment replies have no time limit.

That split matters when a post runs hot. Meta caps private replies on posts and reels at 750 calls an hour per professional account, per its Graph API rate-limit docs as checked in July 2026. A comment still waiting in the queue when its 7-day window closes never gets its DM.

Once someone answers your DM, a second clock starts. Instagram only lets a business reply through any tool within 24 hours of the person's last message.

In BetterSocials, the keyword's DM and its public reply fire independently, so a DM that can't go out doesn't stop the public reply. Check how your own tool handles that case before a launch, because the public reply is the half every scroller sees.

How to set up the keyword in BetterSocials, step by step

BetterSocials puts the whole automation on one screen with five fields, so you can finish the setup below in one sitting. Each step names the button as it appears in the app.

  1. Open Connected Accounts in the sidebar, pick a platform and sign in on that platform's own screen. Start with whichever account gets the most comments.
  2. Go to Comment to DM and hit New keyword link.
  3. Under Accounts, leave the keyword on every connected account or pin it to one.
  4. Under "When someone comments…", type the word you'll say in the caption, such as GUIDE. Capitals don't matter.
  5. Under "Reply on the comment", write the public line, such as "Sent, check your DMs". Adding "or your requests" points non-followers to the right folder.
  6. Under "…and DM them this", write the message and paste your link with UTM tags on it.
  7. Leave AI replies off at the start. Turn it on later and each public reply gets written fresh in your tone instead of repeating one line.
  8. Hit Go live, then comment the keyword from an account that doesn't follow you and check that both halves landed.

Instagram and Facebook get both halves. On YouTube, Threads, LinkedIn Company Pages and TikTok, your message posts as the reply under the comment and the link goes there.

Manychat and Meta Business Suite do it differently

Manychat's help center walks through its Quick Automation called Auto-DM links from comments, which sends a commenter your link in a DM. Anything past that first DM, such as a follow-up sequence, is a flow you build in Manychat's builder.

Meta Business Suite's comment-to-message automation is free. You set it up on desktop, it sends one fixed template you write, and it takes up to 5 case-sensitive keywords per automation. It can also wait 15 minutes before sending unless you reply first.

Meta's help pages describe the message reply and stop there. Test whether a public reply appears on your own page before a launch depends on it.

BetterSocials, Manychat and every other tool on Meta's API can report a DM as sent while Instagram files it where the commenter never looks. People who don't follow you get the DM in message requests, filters can hide it, and throttles queue it. In a June 2026 thread on r/Manychat, a creator reported that fewer than half of their comment-triggered DMs reached commenters.

The public reply is your fix for the requests folder. A line that says "check your requests" tells the commenter where to look, and everyone else scrolling sees you answered.

For the numbers, put a UTM-tagged link in every keyword DM and report clicks per post. Clicks prove the DM arrived and got opened, where a sent counter only proves the API accepted the call. BetterSocials' tracked links, in beta, show which comment or DM led to a click. For the Instagram side in more detail, read our guide on how to set up "comment LINK and I'll DM you" on Instagram in 2026.

TikTok, YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn get the public reply

BetterSocials posts the keyword's public reply with your link on TikTok, YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages. On TikTok and YouTube no tool can turn a comment into a private DM, so the public reply carries the link there. YouTube has no DM API for any tool, and a TikTok comment can't fire a private DM outside TikTok's limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia.

Manychat runs on Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and TikTok. BetterSocials adds YouTube, where the public reply is the whole automation, so you can run it from the same tool as Instagram.

TikTok DMs that people send you can still be answered in BetterSocials. TikTok allows up to 10 replies within 48 hours of the person's last message, on a Business account.

What both halves cost as your contacts grow

Meta Business Suite is free and InstantDM has a Free plan, so either costs less than BetterSocials if basic keyword DMs on Instagram and Facebook are all you need. The math changes once a post pulls thousands of commenters, because Manychat bills by active contacts.

Manychat Pro is $39 a month, billed monthly, for 2,500 active contacts, plus $0.05 for each extra contact, as of October 2026. A Pro account that reaches 4,000 people in a month pays the $39 plus five cents for every contact past 2,500, which lands well over a hundred dollars.

BetterSocials bills by connected accounts, with unlimited contacts on every plan. Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts, and Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts with unlimited teammates.

Every BetterSocials plan has a 7-day free trial with a card required. If you're weighing DM tools on more than this one feature, our list of 10 Instagram DM tools for small businesses in 2026 gives our pick first, then sorts the rest by price.

Keeping the public reply from reading like a template

InstantDM offers AI comment reply variations on every plan, and BetterSocials has an AI replies switch on each keyword, so the public line doesn't repeat word for word. Identical template messages sent at volume are the classic signature of automation. A thread full of the same sentence looks like one.

In BetterSocials, each AI reply uses 1 AI credit, and Creator includes 1,000 credits a month. When credits run out the AI pauses, and it never bills more on its own.

Meta Business Suite sends the fixed template you write. If you use it, keep the template short and read the thread after your first busy post.

FAQ

Which comment-to-DM tool posts a public reply under the comment on Instagram?

InstantDM and BetterSocials both do. Each sends the commenter a DM and posts a short public reply, such as "Sent, check your DMs", under the comment. BetterSocials sets both up from one keyword with no flow builder, at $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts.

What is a Manychat alternative that also replies to the comment?

BetterSocials posts the public reply and the DM from one keyword on Instagram and Facebook, at $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts with unlimited contacts. Manychat Pro is $39 a month, billed monthly, for 2,500 active contacts plus $0.05 per extra contact. Manychat still fits if you need WhatsApp or multi-step flows.

Does the public reply still post if the DM fails?

In BetterSocials, yes. The keyword DM and the public reply fire independently, so a DM that can't go out doesn't stop the public reply. On Instagram, a private reply to a comment is allowed once, within 7 days of the comment, and public comment replies have no time limit.

Does comment-to-DM work on TikTok and YouTube?

Not as a private DM. YouTube has no DM API for any tool, and a TikTok comment can't fire a private DM outside TikTok's limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. On both, BetterSocials posts the keyword's public reply with your link, and it does the same on Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages.

Why do commenters say they never got the DM?

Usually because they don't follow you, so Instagram routes the DM to message requests. In a June 2026 r/Manychat thread, a creator reported fewer than half of comment-triggered DMs reaching commenters. A public reply that says "check your requests" tells them where to look, and tracked link clicks show what arrived.

Is Meta's free comment-to-message automation enough?

For basic keyword DMs on Instagram and Facebook it can be, and it costs nothing. It sends a fixed template you write, allows 5 case-sensitive keywords per automation and can wait 15 minutes before sending. Test whether it leaves a public reply on your own page before you build a launch around it.
